Michigan businesses that are customers of DTE Energy are eligible for financial incentives through the custom rebate program of $.08 per kWh for upgrading to more energy efficient lighting by November 30, 2012.  This program is targeted for customers who have T12 fluorescent lamps to incentivize upgrading as the T12 phase-out will commence on July 1, 2012.

Incentives for lighting upgrades are available to local governments including counties, municipalities, townships, public K-12 school districts, park districts and all commercial businesses in the DTE Energy service areas.

Advantages for upgrading to the new T8 and T5 lighting include immediate energy savings of up to 70 percent, improved lighting performance and simpler maintenance. DTE Energy incentives, provided as grants or rebates, can assist in covering the costs of changing or retrofitting lighting at public facilities to make them more energy efficient.

Here is an example of how a business could save nearly 50% of the material and labor costs:

STATE: Michigan

RATE: $.08 per kWh saved

EQUIPMENT:  100 fixtures, 4-lamp T12, 164 Watts

TIME USED: 3900 hrs per year (75 hrs p/wk)

RETROFIT: 2-T5 Retrofit Kits, 56 watts

kWh SAVED: 42,120 kWh per year

TOTAL REBATE: $3369.60

There is a maximum rebate from DTE Energy of $3500 or 50% of the job. Since this is a custom rebate an application must be submitted prior to purchase. The project will then go through a pre-inspection. Once approved the check will arrive about 4-6 weeks after installation.
